2nd Sunday in Ord. Time

Jan. 17, 2010

In today’s second reading, St. Paul tells the Corinthians (and us) that all of our gifts are from God and that they are given, not for ourselves alone, but for the common good. But the generosity of God knows no limits, the miracle at Cana reminds us that whenever we faithfully do as God asks, He can change our gifts of water into wine!

BATTESIMO DEL SIGNORE 10 genn 2010

We, the members of St. Vincent de Paul of St. Agnes parish wish to thank all the parishioners of St. Dominic’s Church for their wonderful support shown to our food bank during 2009. The donations of money and food were very much appreciated not only by us but also most importantly by the people that we serve. We look forward to your continued support in the New year. We wish you all a very Happy and Holy New Year.

EPIFANIA DEL SIGNORE 3 genn 2010

ST. DOMINIC’S HAND BELL CHOIR
We thank Bishop Fred Colli for blessing the handbells, chimes and choir at the 5pm Sat. Mass. Our Handbell Choir is open to people of all ages (children also) even those who do not have a musical background. Let Fr. Dan know of your interest. Call Susan Ongaro 623-3314.

What are Handbells? A Brief History
Handbells were invented in 17th century England making it easier for bell ringers to practice indoors rather than playing in the cold environment of winter time bell towers. Handbells offered more versatility than tolling sequences. People could now play hymns on handbells which weren’t feasible in the medieval bell towers. Eventually, handbells were brought to North America circa 1840. In the 1940's people began ringing handbells in North American churches. Handbells were first manufactured in North America in the 1960's by companies like Schulmerich Carillons. Today there are over 10,000 handbell choirs in North America. 99% are affiliated with churches and schools. We at St. Dominic’s are excited to initiate a Handbell Choir in our parish. The four octaves of handbells (49 bells in all)are property of Fr. Dan and were purchased by him as a tribute to his mother. The two octaves of Malmark Hand Chimes were given to us by the Sisters of St. Joseph, North Bay.

If you are interested in learning to play the chimes and bells with us, please notify the parish office or contact Susan Ongaro for information. You do not need to be a musician to learn. Proper care of the bells is important. They are true musical instruments.

Donations for music and supplies, etc. for the bells and bell choir are always welcomed.

III DOMENICA DI AVVENTO 13 dic2009
Interrogavano Giovanni: “Che cosa dobbiamo fare?”

TUTTI I SANTI 1 nov 2009

From one Pumpkin to another!!! A woman was asked by a coworker, “What is it like to be a Christian?” The coworker replied, “It is like being a pumpkin.” God picks you from the patch, brings you in, and washes all the dirt off of you. Then He cuts off the top and scoops out all the yucky stuff. He removes the seeds of doubt, hate and greed. Then He carves you a new smiling face and puts His light inside of you to shine for all the world to see.

Special Collection will be taken up at all masses next weekend Sept. 26/27 for the Needs of the Canadian Church.

In Gratitude for 20 yrs. of Generosity(Bishop Colli)
As we commence our campaign for 2009 the theme that dominates my reflection is “Gratitude.” It is with great appreciation and gratitude that we celebrate 20 years of “Sharing the Challenges,” working together to proclaim the Gospel message and building up the Catholic church in Northwestern Ontario.
Please take some time to look over the brochure in today’s bulletin. Our goal this year is $30,000. Pledge cards have been mailed. Please consider making a one time donations or donate over time. You have until May 2010 to honour your pledge.

XIV DOM. TEMPO ORD. 13 sett 2009

XXIII DOM. TEMPO ORD. 6 sett 2009

Today’s readings are about being chosen and sent. The prophet Amos was chosen by the Lord to use his talents for the people of God. The Gospel recounts the story of the sending of the twelve disciples; and in the second reading, St. Paul reminds us that we, too, are chosen. For what have I been chosen? To whom have I been sent?

Gesù chiamò a sé i dodici e prese a mandarli a due a due. Quante ore ha un giorno? Ventiquattro!

New Letters “St. Dominic” have been ordered to be placed on either side of the Church on the beige stucco above the brick line of the walls. This will make it easier for visitors to find our church. In the past, the letters were too small and too low on the building, providing handy access for vandals. The new letters will be placed high on the building and should last many years. If you would like to sponsor a letter, let us know. We plan also a sign board with mass times etc. to be placed outside near the main entrance of the church. Any help is appreciated. We have also ordered a bicycle rack for parishioners. This will be placed on the Spruce Court side of the entrance.

Several new “Pyxes” pronounced “picks” have been ordered for the parish. A pyx is a round guilded container used to being Communion to the sick and shut ins. Families and eucharistic ministers uses pyxes for this ministry. Cost is $30. Ea. If you need a pyx or want to sponsor one, let Fr. Dan know.

Gesù percorreva i villaggi d’intorno insegnando.
